I don’t usually do this. in fact, I’ve never done this before but this book was and is so very important that it deserves a re-blog

it is instructive. it is prophetic. it is a document and it is worth your time. some people may complain about it not being factual enough but I think they miss the point

anyway…enough from me. just remember…it’s not only for ‘Black History MONTH’ (smh) – it’s for LIFE

1 – Working. sure…get 2 jobs (like I kinda have) but for me this is working hard but not smart. your income will increase but the decreases in personal, family time etc negate the benefits. maybe in pre-planned, well thought over spurts perhaps

2 – start a business. at first, this will definitely consist of extreme hard work & investment (maybe even more than above) but if your product & service is highly valued or better yet original then backed by a solid plan you will see the ‘working smart’ benefits begin to start as the money will perpetuate more of its ilk. this leads to the 3rd step

3 – investment. clever but the source of much of human kinds current debasement. this (for moi) is the epitome of ‘working smart’. to borrow & transpose a popular advertisement campaign from over here (the Uk) ‘the money does the work so you don’t have to’. besides exploitation, savagery and opportunism what do you think the rich have in their favour? the ability for their money to traverse the globe meeting its own kind, breeding and making more money. unfortunately, as with the 2nd point, this requires capital which may or may not result from 1. tricky eh?

you can do the inverse of all of these illegally and maybe even earn more money. perhaps legal & illegal will cross paths anyway but that’s what I’ve got

how true are my thoughts?

this isn’t a prescriptive book per se telling you the do’s and do not’s of Pan-African ideology but instead Toyin‘s personal thoughts, feelings and observations on Pan-Africanism and Africanism in general tackling the subject from multiple perspectives

apart from the amount of wisdom in this book, it’s the emotion investment that really gets me. every page feels so loaded with time, experience, time and energy. sometimes its an exhausting read when you think of what it must have taken to be put together

I don’t agree with everything within its pages but this has now become an indipensible part of the Teiko library . I can already see myself pulling it out for reference over and over again…

I’ve read it once and am going back for more. essential reading for any Uk based African (Black) parent – YOU ACTUALLY NEED THIS BOOK IF YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN. if you can’t see the author’s name it says ‘Neil Mayers‘. he’s a very cool brotha and has the chops to back up what he’s written

= my honest reaction upon finally finishing this amazing book (which I am still reading if that makes sense). It has taken over my life for the past two weeks. now I feel empty lol…no joke. extremely immersive

so it’s been a while BUT…despite my incredibly reduced profile I managed to get invited to an event (I know, I know…can’t believe it either)! the doo in question being the album listening party for the High Plains Drifter / Billy Brimstone himself & one of the Uk‘s finest rappers (+ label owners), Jehst. I’ve been waiting for just a hint of this album for a while so the invite email was greeted with a slightly immediate reply (I am trying to get better…seriously)

I’m going to let my solid self-reasoning of trying to keep a low profile take all the weight of me not recognising a soul (well…maybe a few) and standing around gormless waiting for the playback to begin. I did arrive bang on time for it though. the published time that is

after Mr. Thing at around 8pm, playback started. despite it really not being the best listening environment my favourite tracks so far are the wistful Camberwell Carrots, the swingin The Illest, the bounce of Timeless and of course the single Starting Over (which spawned this viral video)

I also managed to catch a word with the man himself. he’s happy with the album but as most creative types, keen to move on to the next one which is good news given the break between the last one and this one. the album has no grand point or scheme other than wanting to make something banging for the fans. ah. realised I did forget to ask about the title…and no picture?! that’s terrible lol but happens eh? *mumbles to self

I missed maybe…2 or 3 tracks conversing with Mr. Thing (who was flying to Slovenia to do a 45 Funk set the next day) and having a good convo with Yungun aka Essa (who has definitely done his share of studying in his life. props to him) but I am already hyped by what I’ve been lucky enough to hear

the event was still going by the time playback of the album came back around with much networking etc but I had to go so…me gone huhuh. peep a review in a future edition of Echoes Magazine. follow me on Twitter for when exactly that’ll be. PEACE

p.s apparently there’s a free online only mixtape by Yungun ft. Mr. Thing on production coming next month if I heard correctly. artwork is done and yeah in case you didn’t read before…free. can’t complain about that can ya! can ya?!
