“once again…he turned it into his own…”

it was only a few days ago that I posted about the ‘secret’ to one of my all time favourite Jay Dee tracks, Shake It Down, (it was a Boz Scaggs and The Band sample!) and no sooner do Bling 47 come again with another entry in their Breaks (Dilla edition) series. this time it’s famed producer Rich Medina speaking on the re-fix of Oblighetto by Brother Jack McDuff

he jus beat it up

filmed in Philly, Medina nonchalantly reflects on what is truly an excellent no exquisite and intimate look at a Blue Note classic by the King Dil Withers

undeniably unique. the musicianship on the [Dilla] record was…superior

I’m not ashamed to admit that I have totally forgot about this track: the deep swing, those Rhodes, the emotive refrains of THAT wailing vocal. time to play this again and again and again…methinks. read the full story at the Bling 47 site here

possible grammar issues aside, the mystery to one of my all time favourite Jay Dee tracks is made clear!

tackling Shake It Down off of the Welcome To Detroit album and filmed in Detroit, here is Black Milk talking about THAT filtered sample (which Jay also wrote about in the liner notes too)

it’s encouraging to know that years after his death, Dilla is still being remembered, discovered and revered for elements of his technique
